Lucky Prajna Pratisthita Mohanty

Lucky Prajna Pratisthita Mohanty, an esteemed Odissi dance exponent, was born in 1986 in Cuttack, Odisha. He received rigorous training under the legendary Guru Kumkum Mohanty at Kala Vikash Kendra. Mohanty holds a Master of Performing Arts in Odissi (Gold Medalist) from Sambalpur University and a Master's in Human Consciousness and Yogic Science from Utkal University. Recognized with a Senior Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, he has been awarded an 'A' grade by Prasar Bharati and the prestigious Singar Mani award from Sur Singar Samsad. His performances have graced renowned festivals such as Konark,Mukteswar, and Khajuraho, and he has showcased his talent internationally in the USA, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Switzerland. Currently, he imparts his expertise and passion for Odissi dance as an instructor at Kala Vikash Kendra, Odisha’s oldest and most esteemed cultural institution, dedicated to preserving and promoting classical arts.

Curriculum

Odissi Dance Curriculum (ABGMVM)

Odissi Dance classes are arranged and students are trained as per the curriculum of ABGMVM, Miraj, Mumbai.

Graded Examination Levels

ABGMVM organizes dance examinations at the following graded levels:

  • Prarambhik
  • Praveshika
  • Madhyama
  • Visharad
  • Alankar

1. Prarambhik (Elementary Level)

Theory

  • Introduction to major Indian classical dance styles (Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, etc.) with reference to their origin.
  • Definitions of fundamental dance concepts: Matra, Laya, Tala.
  • Knowledge of Asamyukta Hastas (single-hand gestures) from Abhinaya Darpana.

Practical

  • 10 basic steps each in Chauka and Tribhanga postures set to Ektaali in three speeds (Vilambit, Madhya, Druta).
  • Recitation with hand gestures of Sthayi Ukuta.
  • Padasthiti (Foot Positions): Sama, Kumbha, Dhanu, Maha – demonstration and identification.

2. Praveshika Purna

Theory

  • Introduction to classical texts: Abhinaya Darpana, Abhinaya Chandrika, Natyashastra (authors, dates, contents).
  • Overview of Indian classical dance forms – origin, costume (Aharya), instruments, style.
  • Notation: Sthayi Ukutas, Arasas, Mangalacharan, Batu / Sthai.
  • Definitions: Matra, Laya, Tala, Avartana, Taali, Khaali, Sam, Vibhaga.

Practical

  • Batu / Sthai – performance, identification of Hastas, Paadabhedas, Bhangis.
  • Recitation of Ukutas and identification of Raga and Tala.
  • Pallavi in Ektaali – performance and Raga/Tala identification.

Theory Papers

  • Paper I: Rangamancha (Stage theory), Abhinava Bharati, relevance of classical texts to Odissi.
  • Paper II: Literary study – Gita Govinda, Kishore Chandran Champu (genre, structure, meter, imagery, ragas).

3. Madhyama / Higher Levels

  • Madhyama Pratham: As per syllabus document (detailed curriculum available).
  • Madhyama Purna: Career and contribution of Charan Das; notations of Moksha.

4. Examination Structure

  • Exams conducted twice a year for levels up to Visharad (Nov/Dec).
  • Theory and Practical examinations are mandatory.
  • Example: Prarambhik – Total Marks: 50 | Minimum Pass Marks: 18.

Admission Charges : Rs. 500.00 (Five Hundred Only)
Monthly tuition Fees : Rs. 500.00 (First Month to be paid in advance at the time of admission.)
